Die deutsche RN Vision-STS-Mannschaft hat die vierte Runde der GT4-European Series in Spa Francorchamps mit weiteren Punkteplazierungen absolviert. In der Pro-Am-Wertung gelang dem Duo Pavel Lefterov / Miguel Christovão ein erneutes Podiumsfinish. Der #111 BMW von Gabriele Piana und Razvan Umbrarescu gelangte zwei Mal als Klassenachter im 50 Wagen starken Feld in die Punkte. Insbesondere im zweiten Lauf krönte man damit eine starke kämpferische Leistung nach einem vorangegangenen Rückschlag im Qualifying.

RN Vision-STS BMW M4 GT4 #110; Beitske Visser/Nico Menzel (Silver-Cup):
Das BMW-Junioren Duo erreichte im Qualifying für die beiden Läufe die Startpositionen 11 (9. in der Silber-Wertung) und 14 (Klassensiebter). Im ersten Lauf war man gut unterwegs, bis man im zweiten Stint eine Durchfahrtsstrafe wegen Überschreitung der Streckenbegrenzungen verhangen bekam. Am Ende stand für das Junioren-Duo Gesamtrang 29 und Klassenrang 14 zu Buche.
Das zweite Rennen gestaltete sich sehr kurz: Beitske Visser wurde noch in der ersten Kurve in eine Kollision verwickelt. Zwar konnte der BMW noch weiter fahren, jedoch erwies sich die Aufhängung als zu verbogen, um noch schnelle Runden erzielen zu können und der BMW M4 GT4 wurde nach 11 Runden aus Sicherheitsgründen in der Box abgestellt.
RN Vision-STS BMW M4 GT4 #111 Gabriele Piana/Razvan Umbrarescu (Silver-Cup):
Das bestplatzierte Silber-Duo der deutschen BMW-Mannschaft schloss das erste Qualifying als Gesamt 17. und 14. in der Silber-Wertung ab. Wegen angeblicher mehrfacher Überschreitung der Tracklimits wurden dem Team für Lauf 2 alle Zeiten aus der zweiten Qualifyingsitzung gestrichen, so dass man Lauf 2 nur von der 46. Startposition aufnehmen konnte.
Rennen 1 absolvierte das Duo Piana und Umbrarescu in gewohnt souveräner Manier. Am Ende standen der achte Gesamtrang und der achte Rang in der Silverwertung zu Buche.
Ein Meisterstück lieferten die beiden Piloten dagegen in Lauf 2 ab: gestartet vom 46. Gesamtrang verbesserte sich Gabriele Piana in seinem Stint kontinuierlich, bis er den BMW M4 GT4 auf Rang 5 an seinen Teamkollegen Razvan Umbrarescu übergeben konnte. Der konnte am Ende Gesamtrang 10 und Klassenposition 8 ins Ziel retten – ein Ergebnis das nach dem Qualifying nicht mehr für erreichbar gehalten wurde.
RN Vision-STS BMW M4 GT4 #112 Pavel Lefterov/Miguel Christovão (Pro-Am-Cup):
Das Pro-Am Duo des Teams schloss die beiden Qualifyings auf Gesamtrang 25 (Klassenrang 5) und 28 (Rang 11) ab. Im ersten Lauf legte man eine starke Performance hin und beendete das Rennen nur 3 Plätze hinter den Teamkollegen als Gesamt-11.te und zweite in der Pro-Am-Klasse mit einem erneuten Klassenpodium. Am Ende fehlten dem Duo auf den Klassensieger nur 10s. Im zweiten Lauf dagegen schlug das Rennpech schon beim Start zu: nach einer Kollision mit einem der Phoenix Racing Audis fiel der BMW des Pro-Am-Duos schon in der ersten Runde aus.
Nico Menzel: “ Das war ein Wochenende zum Vergessen! Spa ist eigentlich eine Strecke die uns liegen sollte: eine Fahrerstrecke wo viel geht und auf die ich mich gefreut habe. Es kam leider einiges zusammen: Wir waren hier vorher nicht testen. Im Qualifying war das Auto ok, aber ich habe jede Menge Verkehr und eine gelbe Flagge auf meiner schnellsten Runde gehabt, daher hatten wir nur Startplatz 11. Im Rennen bin ich im Verkehr hängen geblieben, zudem gab’s im 2. Stint die Durchfahrtsstrafe. In Lauf 2 waren wir nach einem frühen Kontakt schnell aus dem Rennen, so dass ich nicht zum Fahren gekommen bin. Das war schon sehr frustrierend!“
Gabriele Piana: „Wir kamen mit großen Hoffnungen nach Spa. Im Qualifying haben wir so ziemlich das maximale aus dem Wagen heraus geholt und uns für Lauf 1 auf den 17. Startplatz gestellt. Auch meine Zeiten in Q2 waren eigentlich in Ordnung, sind aber alle gestrichen worden, was ich und das Team aber nach Sichtung der Onboardaufnahmen nicht nachvollziehen konnten. In Lauf 1 haben wir einige Plätze gut gemacht und sind mit P8 in den Top-10 gelandet.
Auf Lauf 2 waren wir wegen der schlechten Ausgangslage sehr gespannt. Aber die ganze Mannschaft hat sich nicht hängen lassen und ist das Rennen sehr positiv angegangen und wir sind schließlich nach einer fulminanten Aufholjagd mit P10 und einem weiteren 8. Klassenrang belohnt worden. Wäre die Streichung der Qualizeiten nicht gewesen, dann hätten wir es bestimmt auf das Gesamtpodium geschafft.““
Pavel Lefterov: „Miguel hat im ersten Rennen einen ziemlich guten Job gemacht und mir den Wagen von P25 kommend auf P20 übergeben. Daraus haben wir dann am Ende P11 und den zweiten Klassenrang machen können. Im Quali zu Rennen 2 sind leider auch uns die schnellsten Runden gestrichen worden. Allerdings ist die geplante Aufholjagd nach der Kollision mit dem #6 Audi ausgefallen. Danach war nicht nur das Rad beschädigt sondern auch einige Querlenker gebrochen und wir haben den BMW abstellen müssen. Das war bitter, da auch unsere Konkurrenten in der Wertung Probleme hatten und wir eine Gelegenheit verpasst haben uns in der Meisterschaft zu verbessern.“

Highlighted by a second place finish in the Pro-Am-class for Pavel Lefterov/ Miguel Christovão, the German RN Vision STS racing team scored several top-10 results in the fourth round of the GT4-European Series at Spa Francorchamps last weekend. The team also proved their meddle in the Silver-Cup-class, where the #111 BMW of Gabriele Piana and Razvan Umbrarescu finished in 8th position in both races. After a setback in qualifying, the points-paying finish in race 2 was a great reward after a hard-fought race.
RN Vision-STS BMW M4 GT4 #110; Beitske Visser/Nico Menzel (Silver-Cup):
The two BMW-Juniors had qualified for the two races in 11th (9th in class) and 14th (7th in class) position. In the first race, the two drivers did well, until they were hit by a drive-through penalty for track limit infringements, which dropped them down to 29th place overall and 14th place in the class standings. The second race turned out to be a very short one: Beitske Visser was involved in a first-lap-accident, which damaged the BMW’s suspension. While Visser was able to race on after the incident, the team decided to park the car for safety reasons after 11 laps.
RN Vision-STS BMW M4 GT4 #111 Gabriele Piana/Razvan Umbrarescu (Silver-Cup):
The team’s best-placed Silver-Cup pairing finished the first qualifying in 17th place overall and 14th position in their class.
In the second qualifying session, the team saw all times scored by the #111 deleted due to multiple alleged track-limit violations. The car would thus start the second race from the very back of the almost 50 car strong field.
In the first race, Piana and Umbrarescu showed another solid performance and had climbed up to 8th place overall and 8th place in the Silver-Cup-standings when the checkered flag fell.
The pairings performance in the second race was, however, much more than just “solid”: Starting from 46th position overall, Gabriele Piana drove through the field and steadily improved his position. The Italian found himself in 5th place overall when he handed the BMW M4 GT4 over to his team mate. Razvan Umbrarescu then went on to finish the race in 10th place overall and another 8th place finish in the Silver-Cup – a result that had seemed completely out of reach after the qualifying.

The team’s Pro-Am-pairing had placed the #112 BMW in 25th position overall (5th in class) for race 1 and 28th position overall (11th in class) for race 2. In the first race, Lefterov and Christovão showed a strong performance and finished the race only three places behind their Silver-Cup team mates Piana and Umbrarescu in 11th position overall and second place in the Pro/Am-standings, just ten seconds behind the class winners.
In the second race, however, luck was not on the team’s side. Much like the sister car of Visser and Menzel, the #112 was involved in a first lap collision which spelled the end of their race after only one lap.
Nico Menzel: “A weekend to forget! Spa is normally a track that we should do well at: It’s a driver’s track where a lot depends on a pilot’s individual performance and that I had really been looking forward to. Unfortunately, a number of bad things came together this weekend: We hadn’t tested at Spa before, but the car was alright in qualifying. There was, however, a lot of traffic and a yellow flag on my fastest lap so that we only finished in 11th position. In the race, I was caught in traffic, and then there was the drive-through penalty. In race 2, we were out of the race very early on, so that I didn’t even get to drive. That was very frustrating!”
Gabriele Piana: „We had high hopes for Spa. In the first qualifying session we did just about the best we could do and ended up in 17th place. My lap times in Q2 were quite alright as well, but they were all deleted – something that neither the team nor I can understand after having looked at the pictures from our on-board camera. In race 1 we moved up by a couple of positions and finished in 8th place and thus inside the top-10.
Because of the bad starting position, we were very anxious for race 2. But the whole team really pulled together and went into the race with a positive mindset. After a great comeback drive, we finished in 10th overall and 8th in class. I’m sure we could have finished on the overall podium if it hadn’t been for the deletion of our qualifying times.”
Pavel Leterov: “Miguel did a pretty good job in the first race and handed the car over to me in 20th position after having started in 25th. From there, we went on to finish in 11th place overall and the 2nd place in our class. Unfortunately, my fastest lap times in the qualifying for race 2 got deleted. In the race, our plans for a comeback drive came to nothing after the collision with the #6 Audi. This didn’t only damage our wheel but also some of the suspension arms and we had to park the BMW. This is especially bitter, because our rivals in the Pro-Am-class also had problems and we thus missed out on a chance to improve our position in the championship standings.”
